Biography: Dr. Ted Carmichael has over 14 years experience as a Data Scientist and researcher, in both the public and private sectors. He began his academic career at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, as a Research Assistant, Teaching Assistant, Affiliated Assistant Research Professor, and Adjunct Faculty, earning a Masters of Science (MS) degree in 2006, and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Computer Science in 2010. After a short stint working as a Senior Application Specialist at Dickson Advanced Analytics group, Dr. Carmichael left Charlotte to join TutorGen, a Carnegie Mellon start-up located in Fort Thomas, KY, and operating in the fields of Intelligent Tutoring Systems and Educational Data Mining. At TutorGen, Dr. Carmichael served as PI, Co-PI, and Senior Personnel on multiple grants from the National Science Foundation, the Department of Education, the Department of Defence, and the State of Kentucky, among others.
Dr. Carmichael returned to Charlotte to join the School of Data Science in January of 2024. He has previously developed and taught courses in Computer Simulation and Modeling, Agent-Based Modeling, eScience, Cognitive Science, and Data Analytics. His dissertation won the Distinguished Dissertation Award at UNC Charlotte in 2010, for his work using Agent-Based Modeling and Simulation for Social Science research.
